How do you reduce limescale risk in an espresso machine?
Short answer
Find your water's alkalinity, then bring it toward forty milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate rather than toward zero. Blend hard supply water with distilled, or dose distilled water yourself. Avoid going fully demineralised, which trades scale for corrosion the World Health Organization warns about.
Find out what your water actually is
Get the alkalinity and hardness figures for your supply, either from your water company or a test kit. Everything downstream is guesswork without them, and the two numbers behave differently: alkalinity is the better predictor of scale.
Locate it against the published bands
Compare your figure to the WHO classification: below sixty is soft, sixty to one hundred and twenty moderately hard, one hundred and twenty to one hundred and eighty hard, above that very hard. This tells you how far you are from the brewing target of forty.
Aim for the target, not for zero
The goal is roughly forty milligrams per litre of alkalinity, not the lowest number achievable. Driving hardness to zero eliminates scale and introduces corrosion, because demineralised water is chemically aggressive to the metal it sits against.
Blend or dose to close the gap
If your supply is hard, either blend it with distilled water in a ratio that lands near the target, or start from distilled and dose deliberately. Blending is cheaper and needs one calculation; dosing is more repeatable and immune to seasonal variation in your supply.
Treat descaling as maintenance, not as the strategy
Descaling removes deposit that has already formed on the heating element. Getting the incoming water right prevents it forming. If you are descaling frequently, the water is the problem and the descaling schedule is only managing the symptom.

Why does alkalinity predict scale better than hardness?
Because the carbonate fraction is what actually precipitates. Hardness counts all polyvalent cations regardless of what they are paired with, while alkalinity tracks the carbonate species that stop being soluble when heated. Two waters with identical hardness can scale at very different rates depending on their alkalinity.
How fast does scale actually form?
No honest single answer exists, because it depends on your alkalinity, your throughput and your boiler temperature. The useful signal is directional: the further above the soft band your alkalinity sits, the faster carbonate accumulates on the hottest surface in the machine.
What goes wrong first?
Efficiency, not function. Insoluble carbonates coat surfaces and reduce the efficiency of heat exchangers, so a scaling machine loses temperature stability well before it shows any obvious fault. Shots drift before anything breaks, which is why the problem is usually noticed late.
